Engineering Experience

Parker Hannifin; New Ulm, MN 2009–2016, 2019-Present

Design Engineer – Design and draft gearboxes and servo motors to customer specifications.

  • Create timelines with MS Project and lead FMEA on new products to reduce development timeline and manufacturing defects.  Evaluate custom quotes for manufacturability to reduce cost.
  • Assess compatibility of custom orders with the application to increase customer satisfaction.
  • Communicate with purchasing up front to eliminate delays in delivery due to long lead time items.
  • Create redlined bills of materials to communicate product structure to the documentation group, avoiding issues in manufacturing.
  • Author and process engineering change orders to update prints and fix manufacturing issues.
  • Advise management on deadline estimates and product improvement in order to reduce timelines and increase product quality.
  • Utilize extensive product knowledge to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and keep production running.
  • Train new employees in best practices and standards of work to help them get up to speed.
  • Create standards of work which increased productivity and reduced the amount of training necessary.

Textron Specialized Vehicles/Arctic Cat; St. Cloud, MN 2016 –2018

Mechanical Engineer III – Lead design engineer on brake systems and associated components.

  • Used Excel to create and update a matrix of current product; listing system components, part numbers, notes, etc. in order to keep efficient access to information.
  • Partnered with a vendor to troubleshoot a system that was not meeting specifications.  After making some changes to the system, it passed, allowing units to be shipped.
  • Assigned to a high profile product in a late stage, I redesigned several areas to increase robustness by coordinating with an FEA engineer; utilized knowledge of tolerance stack analysis eliminate a fitment issue and worked long hours to assemble prototype units.  The project was kept on schedule and received well by the industry.
  • Improved the level of documentation and created drawing standards for all wheeled products.  Received unsolicited praise from a co-worker for improving a neglected area.
  • Partnered with a new vendor and the internal test group to qualify a component changes on several products.  Component costs were reduced by as much as 30%.

Performed tests on competitor product in order to determine threshold for an internal test standard.  Determined that the current standard was valid and made changes to increase the performance of our product.

Hutchinson Technology Inc.; Hutchinson, MN 2005 –2009

Product Design Engineer – Design suspension components for hard disk drives.

  • Lead Design for Manufacturing sequence on new or modified product designs to reduce manufacturing defects and increase cycle time.
  • Used ANSYS to simulate product performance under varied conditions.   Based on the FEA information, modified the product design to improve performance.
  • Utilized Design of Experiments to improve robustness and performance of products.
  • Collaborated with customers and manufacturing to set a standard list of tests for design verification and scheduled appropriate testing many times over the life cycle of a product.
  • Used Excel and Minitab to analyze the data and create descriptive graphs.  This testing resulted in critical information which helped our team improve product performance dramatically.
  • Created summary presentations in MS Powerpoint for all lab testing and FEA simulation performed on my products.  Presented these to customers, process engineers, marketing, and quality to gain unity on forward direction.
